natural gas

A naturally occurring, flammable gas (known as methane) formed from dead organisms (often one-celled plankton in ocean environments and plants in swampy land environments). Natural gas forms after the organic remains have become buried by additional layers of sediment and are subjected to intense heat and pressure, causing chemical changes.
